We've also had problems in patients with polycythaemia - the sample
separates, but the gel floats on the top!

High viscosity samples from Myeloma patients also do not spin correctly
with full barrier formation. I had one recently with a TP of 177 and
viscosity of 4.5 during On Call.

We have noticed that a proportion of the SST II tubes do not completely
separate the serum from the cells. These samples will have threads of
red cells running through the gel, emerging in the serum. If these
tubes are left standing overnight I imagine a gradient would form.
I have reported this phenomenon to the MDA and I am awaiting a response
from BD.

We use BD Vacutainer SST II tubes (yellow top). Has anyone witnessed
formation of a concentration gradient in the serum of tubes stored
overnight at 4?C? We would be interested to hear of this or any other
similar problems associated with the use of gel tubes.
