As Chris said, I have recently been involved in producing a video. I
approached Bayer initially but they didn't have anything available at the
time.  Consequently mine is an amateur attempt.  The Educator in our ICU
took a video of drawing blood from an IA line and analysed it on a Bayer
865.  The first attempt was too speedy and the second was rather
laboured.  She intends to add a voice-over to the film footage we have.  I
am not that happy with the product at the moment but feel it will serve the
purpose until I can get version 3 underway (that could be quite a while as
she and I have long To-do lists). I also wanted to get video footage of a
capillary heel collection and collection from a Neo-nate by peripheral line
and umbilical line and would like to encourage our neo-natal staff to come
to the party when I can show them my first attempt.
I had a lot of help from two polytech students who as part of their final
year course have swept up my presentation somewhat and then have put a
self-marking questionnaire onto the hospital intranet so the ward staff can
do their competency checking.  The students did their final presentation
for their course this week. I have not as yet had it all released to me.
When I started training staff, I was training new staff only, but found
that the ward staff were "re-training" my staff (We don't do that eg
identify patients we just put in the bed numbers 1-9 - but there were four
different units using the same machine etc etc ).  I did try the train the
trainer stuff too.  The unit wanted 6 trained  - then another 6.  And when
I finally found a new staff member and asked who trained them it was
someone else completely.  I threw a hissy fit and insisted on retraining
all staff.  I have made a major difference to the techniques used, but I
couldn't face redoing them all again.
Competency checking is quite new in this country and there are no personnel
going spare so I wanted this type of resource available.  It has taken a
lot of time, but I figure it will pay off in the long run. When I get full
access to the video, and most of all I could figure out how to forward it,
I am only too happy to share the material, but I would appreciate people
giving me some honest feedback.  At the moment I have some video footage
that has had a power-point presentation embedded into it.  The original
video is still available too.  Please send me your email and let me know
what you want.  I'd like people to make suggestions on what they would like
to see when we try for version 3.
I'd love the commercial companies to come to produce this type of material
as I think it will save us all a huge work-load.
