Whilst not wishing to sound like an advert, the IL Gem
is a cartridge based system, so in effect when the
cartridge is replaced every three weeks, you get a
brand new electrode, maintenance free. This seems to
get round the problems of electrode ageing and
contamination.
Thanks to David Brown for pointing out my slapdash
ways and the reference to an informative article. As a
cash-strapped DGH lab who do lactates once every
Sheffield flood, we could only carry out a comparison
with our in-house method. I hope to carry out an audit
to find out how many of the 30 lactate results a day
obtained by ITU are actually looked at, acted upon or
deemed clinically necessary.
