Just clearing down e-junk and came across your mail. I commonly find very
elevated dopamine values in patients taking various Parkinsonian drug
preparations. One can either verify the drug therapy from the patient notes
or rerun the sample for 3MT and/or HVA. If either alternatives are normal
then you are probably looking at HPLC interference. If they are all
elevated, chances are the dopamine is genuine drug or tumour product (in the
absence of drug therapy). And yes I have seen isolated raised
dopmines/3MTs/HVAs in adult "potato cell tumours" (also knowna as carotid
body tumours) as well as the more common neuroblastoma.
