As long as the volume (of sample plus acid) or creatinine are measured on
the same sample as the catecholamines it will have no effect on the result
when expressed as umol/24 hours or nmol/mmol creat - both volume (or
creatinine) and cats have changed in proportion with the added acid.
We use 100 ml of 1mol/l HCl (1 mol/l HCl is considered to be irritant,
rather than corrosive, in the BDH catalogue), most samples come in at
around pH2 but we will add more acid (before aliquotting) if pH 3 or 4 (and
record the pH on receipt).
Our 24 hour urine bottle supplier also provides us with a roll of red and
yellow warning stickers which we use on all acid bottles.
