Below is a brief job ad. for someone to manage the new Iraq health monitoring project part funded by Oxfam that we are about to set up. Because of the urgency there is not time to put it in the press. Manager, Iraq Health Monitoring Project
Medact, a UK charity for global health, urgently seeks someone to set up and run a new initiative to assess the health effects of war on Iraq. The aim is to obtain, evaluate and publicise a range of health-related information to be sought from a wide range of sources. The information will be assessed with assistance from an advisory group, and will be distributed regularly by means of an electronic bulletin and on the Medact website.
The aim will be to produce unbiased reliable information on topics such as immediate mortality and morbidity; damage to health services; water, electricity, sanitation infrastructure; nutritional data; the physical and mental health of displaced people; child and maternal health and the health of other vulnerable groups; effects of specific weapons/munitions.
An interim report will be produced giving an overview on the health consequences of the war. A secondary purpose of the project is to develop a model for measuring the core health impacts of war.
The person appointed will need a qualification in health or public health preferably to Masters degree level and will have previous research experience; an ability to evaluate data; good verbal and written communication skills; IT skills including internet proficiency, word processing and working with databases. Ability to work both independently and in a team is also important. An understanding of war and its consequences is desirable.
The project will be located in the Medact Office and the job will be initially for six months with possible extension. Salary £25,000 per annum (pro rata). Hours: 21 per week (days flexible)
