ESRC CASE Research Studentship,
Department of Sociology University of Plymouth
The Department is able to offer a CASE (Collaborative Award for Science and Engineering) Studentship in the area of Migration and Economy to commence in September 2003. The project will explore the extent to which migration in and out of small spatial communities differentially impacts on their socio economic development. The research will be conducted using Census data sets from 1991 and 2001 as well as additional contextual socio economic data. The analyses will mainly focus on Cornwall, but with some comparative analysis of West Wales and Wiltshire.
The studentship is supported by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) and Cornwall County Council. A three year bursary of £11,000 p.a. is offered. The student will be based at Cornwall County Council in Truro.
Applications must be UK or EU nationals and hold a Master's Degree in Research Methods that has ESRC Training Board recognition. The Department of Sociology is an expanding department which prioritises its research profile as indicated by the award of a 4 rating in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. Cornwall County Council has recently been classified as "excellent" and one of the top performing county councils. Its Research and Information Unit has considerable expertise in census and other research topics and is currently leading on the development of a Local Intelligence Network in Cornwall.
