The only Niedecker I have so far is 'The Granite Pail' - The Selected Poems
of Lorine Niedecker. Edited by Cid Corman. (1985). At about the same time
that appeared there was a hardback collected, also edited by Corman, I
think, entitled 'From this Condensery', with a deep green cover and a b/w
photo of her. That's where I discovered Niedecker. Late in life. And she's
among my favourites. The quote in question comes from a short poem entitled
'Poet's Work'. It goes like this:
Grandfather
advised me:
Learn a trade
I learned
to sit at desk
and condense
No layoff
from this
condensery
The Granite Pail, p. 54.
Correct me if I'm wrong, which is most likely, but I think Niedecker
invented that particular word 'condensery'.
