I think the 'psychedelic sixties version' you wondered about was the
Credence Clearwater Revival version. Roger posted a url that appears to
have
recordings of all three versions. It's interesting though how the song is
so
different depending on the renditions. How the Screamin' Jay Hawkins'
original which is such a howl of masculine possessiveness, including that
laugh
which seems somewhat demonic, both in its freedom and its violence, is
altered when sung by Nina Simone where it becomes much more aligned with
cultural expectations by being a feminine and witchful seductiveness.
Perhaps
that's why her version was more culturally iconic? Though the CCR version
moves
it somewhere else, psychedelic, I guess, the haunting of the mind.
