Dear Colleagues,
Thanks, Mike, Ranjan, Susan, Chris, and Al
for your contributions. An excellent session ...
this seems to be touching and gathering in
many of the earlier threads.
With the weekend approaching, I want to
invite list members to think about any issues
or thoughts they wish to bring forward. If you
have not posted and want to, the next three
days offer an opportunity.
On Monday, we will enter the last phase of the
conference. At that time, we'll close the floor
to new contributions and I'll ask speakers,
respondents, and commentators for their
concluding thoughts and summaries.
I'd like to raise one special issue here -- I've
been getting some interesting off-list notes from
design professionals who work in major companies.
Some who might otherwise participate feel that
they should refrain because they are concerned
that their comments may be seen as company policy
or as a comment on their firms. Others wonder whether
one must be a scholar to post.
One or two of the speakers have had the same kind
of correspondence.
Please do join in. Rob Curedale was a frequent
contributor to this list when he worked in industry,
and others -- like Al -- still work in industry.
In a setting such as this, no one takes your private
views as a statement of company policy -- this is a
forum for open inquiry, and the kinds of questions
and comments we raise here address the field as a
whole, not the specific policies or practices of any
one firm.
Naturally, I'll welcome your private thoughts, and I
know the other speakers do. My hope is that you will
share your valued thoughts with our many readers --
there are many professional practitioners here, as
well as teachers, students, and more than a few who
fill all three roles.
Please join in. The voice of direct industrial
experience is valuable to us all.
Warm wishes,
Ken Friedman
