Hi Angela,
Agnes Varda's Cleo de 5 a 7, a 'Left Bank New Wave' film, as opposed to the
predominantly Right Bank New Wave people, affords an interesting woman's
perspective on this. There is a good review of the film in the Positif 50
collection published by MOMA. Presumably you know about Godard's 2 or 3
Things, Vivre sa vie etc.
The most celebrated link between the French New Wave and New Hollywood is
Bonnie and Clyde, which was consciously influenced by Truffaut. But Alan J
Pakula's first film The Sterile Cuckoo features in Liza Minnelli a 60s
heroine under the influence of the New Wave, as far as I can remember. Look
too at the way New Wave archetypes are parodied in What's New Pussycat (Clive
Donner, 1965). If your project were wider in scope, a consideration of the
New Wave's impact on the British New Wave heroine - Julie Christie in Billy
Liar! Darling - might be interesting. John Schlesinger, who directed Darling,
also directed Midnight Cowboy, a US New Wave title with its own share of
'liberated women'. I suppose the Moreaux and the Karinas permeated a range of
60s films. Sounds like an interesting project.
Good luck,
Richard
