Apologies, Alison.
But I do think it's more than simply that he was *described* as obscure
(though to me not so I think in terms of language, which was the focus of
the accusation which was leveled at him in the twenties).
On a simply basic level, the kinds of personal allusion that Auden uses
which is integral to his poems. And here, we're actually in a *better*
position to understand his work than anyone outside the McSpaunday coterie,
due to the Labours of Scholars (who can at times be useful).
Deepest for me is the politics/gender mix -- who is the outsider? Goes back
to (at least) _The Orators_.
This is partly place and partly time.
Cheers,
Robin
