Thanks to those who replied to my query about this.
Dominique Lagorgette and Raf Salkie both confirm that the
famous B & G article has not been published in a French
translation. Thanks to them for other useful sources:
C Kerbrat-Orecchioni 'Les interactions verbales' tome 2
(1992) - reviewed by me in JFLS, 4/1, 1994
F Braun 'Terms of address' (1988, Mouton)
A page on Francoise Labelle's web site, which summarises
some of the B&G work:
http://www.uqac.uquebec.ca/~flabelle/socio/tuvous.htm
I would add Béatrice Coffen's recent book, 'Histoire
culturelle des pronoms' (Champion, 2002), which covers all
the Romance languages, and even creoles.
