I think that Gertrud's announcement that she is
handing over the JFLS Reviews Editorship is a good moment
for us to thank her publicly for the quite exceptional
contribution she has made to AFLS, JFLS and the discipline
in general over the years.
She was one of the founding members of AFLS in 1981 and
served first as Membership Secretary and later as
President. Since 1991 she has been Reviews Editor of JFLS
and has in this capacity seen several hundred book reviews
through to publication in the Journal. Under her direction,
the Reviews section has acquired a reputation as probably
the most informative in our discipline, combining extensive
coverage with fair and thorough assessments of the works
reviewed.
Gertrud's regular and enthusiastic participation at AFLS
conferences and workshops has also enriched the life of the
association in no small measure. Her publications (ranging
from dialectology and creolistics to language learning)
have informed and stimulated academics and students
for some 40 years now.
Thank you, Gertrud, for all this - and we look forward to
seeing you again at conferences and workshops whenever
possible!
Aidan
