I Think this comment is a result of confusion.
As part of the National NHS-IT (please be careful with the order of letters
in this acronym) Programme, There is a contract for what is called e-Booking
about to be awarded to one or all of a short-list of 3 suppliers. This is to
enable GPs to book patients in to their local hospital for apppointments and
has nothing to do with Pathology.
In the usual wonderful way of the world - or our bit of it - It is not clear
what happens if, like mine, you local hospital has no hope of communicating
with the booking system. Nobody knows if the initiative will fund trusts to
upgrade to handle the bookings.

One of the major issues which we all have to address is how to populate our
laboratory (and/or trust) databases with new NHS numbers. To ask clerks or
BMS staff to type 10 digits correctly is plainly unachievable, and since the
GP systems almost all have verified NHS numbers (for those customers who
have new NHS numbers) it would seem sensible to adopt a means of receiving
these electronically or in bar-code form.
If the PCTs want bells and whistles, we have to get into discussions pretty
fast, since the N-SHIT (whoops) plan is pretty draconian an is becoming high
profile. We cannot and must not bury our heads on this one
with best wishes

We are still having problems at Lewisham.
Apart from the tedious IT issues there is a process problem with paper
requests from GPs.
A major complaint from the GPs is that we send reports to the wrong Dr
or Practice. Partly data input errors in the lab but mostly poor quality
of information on request forms. We provide the main practices with self
adhesive labels for their requests to Path & Radiology. These contain
eye readable name/address plus national Practice and GP codes in barcode
format. They do not include patient details which are mostly
handwritten.
I have proposed investing in a system such as Datalog or Anglia to link
to our iSoft Telepath. These systems allow existing software in the GP
systems to print a request including all details in both eye readable
and 2D barcode format and read this into the Path systems.
I can easily make a business case for this and be cost neutral over 2
years as well as solving the quality issues. This proposal was resisted
at our last Trust/GP link meeting. An external IT supplier who has
business with the Trust stated that a national system for direct
electronic requesting was imminent.
Has anyone heard of this ?
Has anyone developed successful alternatives to the commercial systems
?
All responses appreciated.
