Dear Eric,
We've sent 3 in the last 2 years (all on the same patient) to Dr A
Smith/Peter Burrows 0161.276.4179 on Liver Unit, MRI
Look on Pubmed for a "recent" paper from Holland. & including A Smith.
Sorry no ref to hand but this may help ...
I made a note at the time as follows:
Serum P3NP or (P III NP), ie type III procollagen aminopeptide, is a
serological marker of hepatic fibrogenesis, useful to assess the early liver
damage seen in patients on long-term methotrexate for psoriasis.
Particularly if measured serially, this test is shown to reduce the need and
costs for the traditionally recommended regular liver biopsy, and treatment
is changed before irreversible damage from cirrhosis occurs.
Not all fibrosis is detected, but if P3NP is normal the risk of missing
significant liver damage has been shown to be low. This may especially
help in the elderly and other patients one is reluctant to biopsy.
Best wishes,
Les
