Subject: Fasle positive pregnancy test
Dear All
We have recently carried out a pregnancy test on a 20 year old girl,
admitted to ICU with sudden collapse and cardiac arrest. The pregnacy test
was positive by our pregnancy test kit ( Vedilab's Babycheck). A gynae
opinion was sought and they didn't think she was pregnant and requested a
serum HCG which was <1. A second urine sample was also positive. We then
analysed both the serum and urine for HCG on the Axsym and they were both
negative but the urine was positive on the ABBOTT slide test for HCG. We
tried another pregnancy test kit and the urine was negative but we got a
diffuse blue band. (A discrete pink band would have been positive.)
The urines were collected by catheter but no lignocaine gel was used.
We have checked the serum and urine for rheumatiod factor and both are
negative. A urine drug screen only showed drugs which were used in ICU
(apparently cannabis can give false positives).
Has anyone any ideas of what might be interfering to give us this false
positive result?
