Thanks to all who answered my query. Too few responses (14) to gauge
general practice but for those of you who are interested:
12/14 replies expressed the same concerns as myself regarding the poor
quality of data. Despite this, 6/14 labs report clinical details on their
hard copy reports, 8/14 do not. One person had shown that errors can cause
clinical risks. Most respondents felt standards were unlikely to improve
without electronic requesting or scanning of requests. Three labs reported
varying minor degrees of flack from users for not returning clinical
details. Two labs reported no negative feedback when they stopped providing
them. Only one lab (in New Zealand) commented in a fall in the level of
clinical details provided with their requests. One lab facilitates the use
of clearer handwriting by providing a 25 character field marked off into
individual boxes for the requesting doctor to write any additional data he
wishes to have returned on the report.
No clear trends here - comprehensive electronic requesting is some way off
for my lab, I can feel a local solution coming on!
