From time to time in recent months there has been much discussion on
Mailbase about non-medical staff ordering and acting on pathology tests.
Some of this has at times shown a rather head-in-the-sand attitude to the
changes happening around us to deliver the government's NHS Plan.
The Department of Health (in conjuction with the RCN) have just published
"Freedom to practise: dispelling the myths" by way of "busting the myths"
about the legal and professional frameworks supporting the extended roles of
nurses and other allied health professionals.

This all means:
* it is even more important than ever for us to be involved locally
in setting up the investigative protocols under which this greatly extended
population of clinical users will be working with and acting on our tests
* we must bear in mind the wider audience than we might previously
have supposed for our output.
