I had a call today from Urology. They were consulted on a patient with an
ileostomy who sometimes passes appreciable amounts of a clear fluid out of
her rectum, instead of the usual mucus that is sometimes passed in such
cases. The liquid looks like urine, not like a liquid stool, and they
suspect a fistula.
They want to know if we can measure anything in this fluid that could
identify it as a urine. What would be the best approach ? Creatinine ? Urea
? Electrolytes compared to a urine sample at the same time ( should be
similar ) ? All of the above ?
Thanks
Wolfgang Schneider
