Responding to Birgit
There is no problem with people thinking that "design
is special". They are simply choosing to restrict
their understanding according to whatever intent,
context and background(experience, discipline, etc)
they have in mind. The problem is that there is
currently no theoretical framework through which to
integrate their particular understandings with that of
others having other points of view. Science has shown
that it is possible to create a framework supporting
discourse across many disciplines concerned with
explaining what exists. Design has the problem of
doing something similar regarding what does not yet
exist. Fortunately, science and design share the same
foundations in purposeful thought - foundations that
affords the possibility of a theoretical framework
supporting all practical disciplines. Analogy,
metaphor, etc are tools for relational thinking within
this framework.
