medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Learned Listmembers:
Would you be so kind as to give me your opinion on several terms/images in
lines from a song posted on another list? The song was heard in an Advent
context, though I'm inclined to think the references to letting the old year
out and the new year in are actually consistent with 1 Jan.
I'm especially interested in possible meaning, symbology, or context for the
phrase "levy dew," and the images of seven gold wires and bugles. I'm
assuming that the "Fair Maid" with gold on her toe is a Marian image. Here's
the lines:
>>Here we bring new water from the well so clear,
>For to worship God with, this happy New Year.
>Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine;
>The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.
>Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her toe,
>Open you the West Door and turn the Old Year go.
Thank you!
