medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Here is the URL for the synagogue wall formerly at

Among the images ,which I cannot disentangle and/or
identify, is a "Finding of Moses." If the image is the
one I think it is, it bears some iconographic
similarity with Madonna and Child groups. There is a
seated woman holding what I think is a child under a
canopy of sorts on the left in the lower portion of
the image and a standing woman holding child to her
left, viewer's right. Perhaps Moses as a type of Jesus
- and his being depicted as found by Pharaoh's
daughter - was a sort of substitute for the infant
Jesus in early Christianity, notoriously uninterested
in the infancy narratives.
