Today (22. December) is the feast day of:
Chaeremon, Ischyion, and other martyrs (after 250) Victims of Decius'
persecution in Egypt. Chaeremon, the elderly bishop of Nilopolis, escaped
with companions to the mountains of Arabia. They were never seen again.
Ischyrion, on the other hand, was procurator for an Alexandrian magistrate.
When he refused to renounce his faith, his boss had him beaten, then
impaled.
Flavian of Acquapendente (d. 362) A prefect of Rome, Flavian fell foul of
Julian the Apostate, who had the saint branded on the forehead as a slave,
then exiled to Acquapendente, where Flavian died in prayer. He was the
father of St. Bibiana.
Jutta of Diessenberg (blessed) (d. 1136) Jutta was a German noblewoman who
became a recluse. Women gathered around her, whom she formed into the
Benedictine convent of Diessenberg. Her most famous student (and
successor) was Hildegard of Bingen.
Adam of Saxony (d. c. 1210) Adam was a Cistercian, sacristan at the
monastery of Loccum in Saxony. He was noted for his devotion to the Virgin
Mary, and credited with visions of her and miracles.
