medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear List-members,
In the course of my work, I am making a reference to a tapestry of the
Speculum Humanae Salvationis. According to the secondary source in German
that discusses this work (and my poor reading of it), one scene depicts
three Old Testament scenes of conquest: "Banaias" killing the lions,
"Simeon" tearing the lions to shreds, and "Aioth" killing "Eglon". My
question is: does anyone have an idea what the English translation of these
names are or what Biblical references these scenes might depict? A quick
search of the concordance in my Bible did not seem to correspond to these
scenes.
Many thanks in advance. You may reply to me off-list, as this is perhaps
not interesting to all.
Sincerely,
June Mecham
