medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. December) is the feast day of:
Eucharius of Trier (mid 3rd cent.) Eucharius was the first bishop of
Trier; his cult is attested from 455. Gregory of Tours reports that E.
protected Trier from a plague epidemic. Later legend made E. a disciple of
St. Peter, sent along with Maternus as a missionary to Gaul. His feats
there included resurrecting Maternus---40 days after his death!---by
touching him with St. Peter's staff. The staff, by the way, was kept at
Cologne until the end of the tenth century, when half of it was given to
Trier (it was later removed to Prague). The Catholic Encyclopedia reports
the medieval belief that the pope doesn't use a crozier because Peter had
given his to Eucharius.
Syrus of Pavia (3rd-4th cent.?) Syrus is believed to have been the first
bishop of Pavia---later legend reports that he, too, was sent there by the
apostles. He is the main patron of Pavia (and the soccer stadium in Milan
is named after him).
Hipparchus and Philotheus (d. 297?) According to their passio, when
Emperor Galerius was in Samosata (on the Euphrates), H and P did not appear
at the thanksgiving sacrifice for the emperor's victory over the Persians.
They were flogged and imprisoned, but since they were still unwilling to
conform they were crucified along with five men they had converted.
Leocadia (d. 303) Leocadia was a virgin martyr of Toledo. Little is known
of her life; the seventh-century acta tell that she was imprisoned and then
executed by the prefect Dacianus. An important cult rose at her tomb in
the Roman cemetery of Toledo. But her relics were moved to Oviedo because
of Muslim persecution, then to Flanders. . . and then during the
sixteenth-century wars of religion were returned to Toledo.
