medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
you might want to check weinstein and bell's <I>saints in society<I>. they
did a massive study of the social origins of saints. as i recall they were
really interested in hagiography as an avenue to social history, but they
did interesting "demography" of saints in the process.

Wasn't Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis of peasant origins?

i'm of the ideological opinion that the sons of "peasants" becomming
monks/canons --much less abbots/dignataries/bishops-- in this period were
very, very rare birds indeed.
i assume (since i read it on the web) that Dominic's origins are reliably
attested.
does anyone know of other instances of suchlike occurances --pre-13th c.,
since Times Changed, after that ?
and, thanks Phyllis, for the constant supply of material to exercise the
idle
mind with even more idle questions.
best from here,
