medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Budoc's feast day was once 8 December but for many years now it has been 9
December. Gilbert Bataille, s.v. "Budoco", _Bibliotheca Sanctorum_, vol. 3
(1963), pp. 586-87, says that because of the rapid spread of the
celebration of the Immaculate Conception it was moved to the following day
(p. 587: "la festa, celebrato un tempo l'8 dic., per la rapida diffusione
della sollenita [accent omitted for purposes of e-mail] della Concezione fu
riportata al giorno seguente").
The observation about there being more than one Budoc (vel sim.) reminds me
that the saint Simeon (better: Symeon) of 28 November is no longer thought
to have been a Grand Logothete (though he +was+ a high official) or to be
identical with the somewhat earlier historian Symeon the Logothete. He is
now usually referred to as Symeon Metaphrastes, signalling his
hagiographical accomplishments. See the _Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium_,
vol. 3, s.v. "Symeon Logothete" (pp. 1982-83) and "Symeon Metaphrastes"
(pp. 1983-84).
Best,
John Dillon
