Could it be related to race? In the U.S., the only people burned for crimes
were black slaves who rebelled against their owners, free blacks who led
uprisings against authorities, and blacks convicted of witchcraft. Even when
the crime was committed by both blacks and whites together (such as
upraisings against a law perceived as unjust), only the blacks were burned.
