medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. December) is the feast day of:
Diodorus, Marianus, and companions (d. 283) This was a large group of
Roman Christians martyred under Numerian; apparently they were surprised at
prayer in a catacomb, and the authorities simply walled up the exit.
Ansanus the Baptizer (d. 304) Ansanus was a Roman of good family. He
converted to Christianity at the age of twelve, whereupon his father
denounced him to the authorities. The boy escaped, and went on to be a
very effective missionary, converting so many at Bognorea and then Siena
that he won the nickname "the baptizer." Finally he was arrested and
executed in the Great Persecution.
Tudwal (6th cent.) Tudwal was a native of Wales who became famous when
transplanted to Brittany. He is supposed to have gone to the Leon area,
along with his large family and monks, settling at Lan Pabu. He became a
bishop at the insistance of King Childebert I, and administered Treguier
until his death.
Eligius (Eloi) of Noyon (d. 660) Eligius was a goldsmith who entered
Frankish royal service. As he progressed to the top of his craft, E. also
became a priest, then bishop of Noyon in 641. He proved to be a very
successful preacher, evangelizing much of Flanders, and also founded
monasteries at Noyon, Paris, and Solignac. E's cult only became really
popular in the late Middle Ages.
John of Vercelli (blessed) (d. 1283) John studied at Paris and then taught
canon law there. As the Dominicans began to win over his best students,
John too decided to enter the order. He was sent to Vercelli in 1232 to
establish a convent, went on to establish several other houses, became
provincial of Lombardy, and then from 1264 until his death was master
general of the order. Legend reports that when he translated the relics of
Dominic, the body turned its head toward John in approbation; John moved to
another part of the church from humility, only to have the head turn toward
him yet again.
