I had a very varied response. It ranged from those who would not even
consider single staffing, to others who are running quite a few service
points in this way.
The replies were as follows-
One authority which had changed from single staffing and two in the process
of changing.
A couple of comments against the idea of single staffing.
The above cited staff safety and H & S issues and/or thought there might be
problems with the staff/unions if it was brought in.
However, three authorities are using single staffing, one running as many as
half of the libraries and all their mobiles with single staff.
One has "double manners" in the evening. In another "all service points
display prominently a poster pointing out that children under 8 must be
supervised whilst in the library by a responsible adult at all times".
They feel that CRB checks are important for the staff and either already do,
or will, "seek CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) Standard level checks for all
our staff, and enhanced level checks for anyone who ever works as a lone
worker including on mobiles".
Best wishes
Viv.
