medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. November) is the feast day of:
Martin of Tours (d. 397) Martin was born in Pannonia (Hungary), where his
father was an army officer. Martin also joined the army, but became
convinced that Christians should not shed blood. Upon refusal to serve,
legend reports that he was tied up and put in the front rank of the army,
upon which the enemy decided to give up without a fight. After discharge,
Martin became a hermit at Liguge, where he soon attracted followers,
creating the first monastery in Gaul. He became bishop of Tours in 372,
actively evangelizing his diocese and in the process winning a great
reputation in doctrinal disputes (most notably for defending Priscillian)
and as a miracle worker.
Bertuin of Malonne (d. c. 698) Bertuin was an Anglo-Saxon monk. He was
consecrated as a missionary bishop and went to Rome, where he stayed for
two years. After that he went to the area of Namur where he founded the
monastery of Malonne and used it as a base for missionary activities.
Theodore the Studite (d. 826) Theodore was born at Constantinople and
became a monk near Mt. Olympus; he became abbot in 794. In 799 Theodore
revived the monastery of Stusios in Constantinople, which became a model of
monastic practice. He boldly denounced Emperor Constantine VI's adulterous
marriage (and was exiled) and defended images in a revival of the
iconoclast controversy (and was imprisoned and then exiled). His
theological and liturgical works were very influential, but it is his
monastic teaching that seems to be at the heart of his importance in the
eastern church.
Agnes of Bavaria (blessed) (d. 1532) Agnes was a daughter of Duke Ludwig
IV of Bavaria. She was educated by the Poor Clares at their convent in
Munich, where she died at the age of seven.
