medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings to the list!
I have a bit of a dilemna. Over a year ago, I organized a fund-raising
effort by purchasing a copy of Molanus' edition of Usuardi Martyrologium
(printed 1568) for a raffle. The raffle is over, the prize awarded... to
someone whose personal business is dealing in rare books. (Because that is
the way that fate works, isn't it?) She didn't want the book, so she gave it
to the person who she thought would most appreciate it... me.
I don't feel comfortable keeping the book. As the organizer of the
raffle, it seems sort of dishonest, somehow, for me to profit from the
group's effort.
I offered the book to the local Catholic school, since they are kind
enough to let us meet in their rooms once a week - but they don't want it
either, saying that they are not able to care for such an old tome. (It is a
Church & grade school.) If I force it on them, it will be sent to their
diocese head and who knows where from there. It seemed to be more burden
than gift. So I've dropped that idea.
Does anyone have any ideas? _I_ think the book is special, considering
it's age and subject (the outer binding is gone but the spine and pages are
practically pristine) and want to be able to tell the folks in my group (a
local chapter of the SCA) that it ended up someplace where it's uniqueness
will be appreciated.
The only other suggestion that's been offered is to sell it on ebay and
donate the funds back to the group - which would work, but would not be as
satisfying as gifting it to some establishment or person who would treasure
it.
Thank you,
Terri Morgan
