In discussing the matter with priest historians familiar with Southern
California history, the general consensus is what I suspected:
San Taela is likely a corruption of Santa Ela, with either a missing prefix
to "Ela" (ie, Ysabela, Isabela), or with "Ela" serving as a regional or
dialectical abbreviation for Elena, Saint Helen, in the manner of Ma.
meaning Maria.
I invite Listmembers who have enountered similar regional abbreviations of
names to chime in.
