THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PAEDIATRICS AND CHILD HEALTH
"How to Practise Evidence-Based Child Health"
13-14 March 2003
Edinburgh
Aims of the Course: The course aims to introduce health care professionals
to some of the key skills required to use the best available evidence in
their clinical decisions. These include how to:
* Frame answerable questions from clinical or policy problems
* Find the best available evidence to answer the question
* Critically appraise research and other evidence for its validity and
usefulness
* Incorporate evidence into clinical decisions
Programme: Following an introductory presentation on evidence-based child
health and how to get the question right, there will be a series of
practical sessions during which participants will work in small
multi-displinary groups with guidance from tutors. Topics covered will
include searching the scientific literature and appraising research
articles both on diagnosis and on therapy. Examples from child health will
be used and preparatroy material will be provided in advance of the course.
Who should attend? Although the course is based on examples of practice and
policy problems in child health, the concepts are relevant to professionals
from all sectors of the health service including: paediatricians, PAMs,
health visitors, nurses, general practitioners, managers and others whose
work relates to child health will find the examples particularly relevant.
Previous experience in using research evidence to make decisions is an
advantage but not essential. The course is designed for participants who
primarily want to practise, rather than teach, evidence-based health care.
Cost: £300 (covering tuition, course materials and catering)
