medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
> Have you tried Panofsky? I think he may deal with it in Renaissance and

Dear Catherine,
I've certainly read Panofsky, who was a pioneer in this field, but he
is not the most theologically oriented of authors, and his treatment
of devotional themes (e.g. "disguised symbolism") has been pretty
roundly attacked since he proposed it. Having just this morning read
Jacqueline Jung's excellent recent article on choir screens (Art
Bulletin, vol. 82, 2000), she reminded me of another very good work
on this topic, Sixten Ringbom, "Devotional Images and Imaginative
Devotions: Notes on the Place of Art in Late Medieval Private Piety,"
Gazette des Beaux-Arts, 73 (1969), 159-70, and she mentioned a
perhaps even more appropriate work which I hadn't come across before:
David L. Clark, "Optics for Preachers: The De oculo morali by Peter
of Limoges," Michigan Academician, vol. 9 (1977), 329-43.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
