medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. November) is the feast day of:
Machar (6th cent.) The Irish Machar came to Iona with Columcille. He
evangelized Mull and later the Picts in the Aberdeen area. He is
anachronistically called the first bishop of Aberdeen. The medieval
Aberdeen Breviary improved on his story even more, however, making Machar
an "archbishop" of Tours, appointed by Gregory the Great.
Emilian Cucullatus (Millan) (d. 574) Emilian started his career as a
shepherd in Navarre, but at about the age of 20 he became a hermit. He
spent the next forty years in the mountains around Burgos. But the local
bishop demanded that E. be ordained, after which he became a parish priest.
But his excessive charity soon led to him being forced from his parish; he
became a hermit again, dying at the age of 100. In art, Emilian is shown
on horseback, fighting Moors.
Cunibert (d. 663) The Frank Cunibert was educated at the court of Clothar
II at Metz. He became archdeacon of Trier and in 623 bishop of Cologne.
He seems to have been a model political bishop, working closely with
several kings as well as his fellow bishops, and proving to be a good
administrator of his church. He founded several churches, and the
monastery of Stablo-Malmedy.
Cadwaladr (d. 664) Cadwaladr was a king of Gwynedd, who won such a great
reputation for piety and love of peace that he won the nickname
"battle-shunner."
Lebuin (d. c. 775) Lebuin was an Englishman who became a monk at Ripon.
In 754 he joined the other Anglo-Saxon missionaries in Germany and Frisia.
The main center of his own missionary work was Deventer.
Astrik (Anastasius) of Pannonhalma (d. c. 1030-40) Radla, probably a Croat
or a Czech, became a monk in Rome, where he took the name Anastasius. When
Adalbert of Prague was forced to return to his diocese, A. accompanied him.
He became first abbot of Brevnov, but was forced to flee to Hungary.
There he became an active missionary and first abbot of Pannonhalma (the
first monastery in Hungary, founded by Stephen). A. then crowned his
career as first archbishop of the Hungarian Church, with see probably at
Kalocsa.
