medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Geoffrey Barraclough, "The Medieval Papacy," p. 26, places it a thousand
years earlier, in the reign of Leo I (440-61). E. A. Livingston, "The
Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Xian Church," s.v., says, "... from the
15th cent. it became a regular title of honour for the pope." If
Barraclough is right, then a millennium must have passed between first use
and regular use of the title.
Best wishes,
John McCulloh
