medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Marjorie:
Sorry for the delay: I was digging up monk-refeferences
For this dutch miniature
(http://www.geocities.com/cdesastre2000/TXti2.JPG)
I was able to find a description in _The Golden Age of Dutch Manuscript
Painting_ (Exh. Cat.), New York, 1990, p. 276: "The first temtaption the
devil disguises as a hermit challenges Christ..."
As for Botticelli
(http://www.geocities.com/cdesastre2000/TXti3.jpg)
T. Raquejo Grado, -Sandro Botticelli_, Madrid, 1993, p. 57: "A la izquierda,
el demonio (disfrazado de monje o eremita) tienta a Cristo..."
I am sure this iconography occurs elsewhere. I first met it in a
13th-century Spanish capital: at that very moment I was unaware of Erich's
reference, so it was just a guess. Now I see that other authors assume the
hermit/monk theory.
If I come accross with any textual evidence, I'll let you know (for the
moment I am away from any library holding the Patrologia, the Corpus
Christianorum or any patristic reference, so the only thing I can do is
wait...)
Best Regards
Carlos
