medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Date aside, pontifex maximus was one of the titles of the emperor of
Rome. The continuation of the title with the head of the Church is
consistent with the notion, much later, that Rome never actually died,
but was continuous under the pastoral care of the mother Church.
