medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
According to "The Church Visible", p. 379,
" The Title Pontifex Maximus (The Greatest Pontiff) ws not adopted until
1464 by Pope Paul II--for himself and his successors."
It goes on to talk about the origins of the title from ancient Rome, which I
would be happy to share with you if you would like to delve further into the
topic.
