medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (2. November) is the feast day of:
All Souls. This feast was instituted by Abbot Odilo of Cluny (d. 1049).
The practice of praying on this day for the souls of all the faithful
departed spread to the entire western Church. The Armenian Church
celebrates a similar feast for all the dead, but on Easter Monday.
Justus of Trieste (d. 303) The Acta of Justus tell that he was a Christian
from childhood who refused to follow the imperial edicts against
Christians. He was martyred by being thrown into the sea with lead weights
tied to his arms and legs.
Carterius and companions (d. c. 315) This was a group of ten Christian
soldiers from the army of Emperor Licinius, burned at the stake at Sebaste
(Armenia).
Marcian of Chalcis (d. 387) Marcian was a Roman aristocrat who gave up his
position at the imperial court and high military office to become a hermit
in the Syrian desert. He attracted so many disciples that he founded a
monastery and placed it under the supervision of his disciple St. Eusebius.
As he grew old, Marcian was so annoyed at the vultures hovering around
waiting for his relics (his nephew even built a chapel to house the M's
remains as soon as they came available) that he exacted a promise from
Eusebius to bury him secretly. Eusebius did so, and Marcian's relics were
not discovered for fifty years---after which they became a focal point of
pilgrimage.
