medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As to the "how" of Gallic provincial divisions, didn't it follow
Diocletian's imperial administrative divisions (hence "diocese" for a
bishop's territory), with the imperial government centers serving as the
episcopal sees? For places like Germany, where there was no overlay of
Roman administrative territorial division, this model did not hold,
obviously, and folks like Boniface set things up from whole cloth. Even in
these cases, though, Roman settlements tended to become the sees (e.g..
Cologne, Mainz, Trier, Salzburg, Regensburg, etc.) Hope this helps some...

at some point later a fellow holding that office would be styled

does anyone know off the top of their heads when --and how-- the division of
Gaul into "provinces" (under an archbishop) came about ?
and how or why certain cities were chosen as provincial sees ?
was Sens a more important town than, say, Paris or Laon; or was the
geographical situation the primary consideration ?
just idle curiosity.
best from here,
