medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. October) is the feast day of:
Quirinus of Siscia (d. 308 or 309) Quirinus of bishop of Siscia (modern
Sisak, Croatia). He was imprisoned during Diocletian's persecution, and,
at the local prefect's order, thrown into a river with a millstone around
his neck.
Antiochus of Lyons (5th cent.) Antiochus tracked down his bishop Justus
(see yesterday's entry) to his hiding place in a monastery in Egypt to beg
him to return to his see. When Justus refused, Antiochus stayed with
Justus until J's death, then returned to Lyons, where he became bishop.
Euthymius the Younger (d. 886-98) Euthymius married and begat a daughter,
but after a year of marital life abandoned his wife and child to go and be
a monk. At first he lived on Mt. Olympus, then Athos. In time he founded
a monastery near Thessalonike. Euthymius was credited with both miracles
and prophecy.
