medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. October) is the feast day of:
Vincent, Sabina, and Christeta (d. 303) These siblings grew up in Avila,
Spain. Vincent was imprisoned at the order of the local governor.
However, he converted his guards, and then escaped with the help of his
sisters Sabina and Christeta. As soon as they reached Alba, though, the
trio was arrested and tortured to death.
Capitolina and Erotheis (d. 304) This pair were a Cappadocian lady and her
servant. Capitolina made herself too obvious at a bad time by giving all
her wealth to the poor; both were arrested in the persection, and soon
executed.
Abraham the Child (or the Poor) (d. sometime 366-77) Abraham was an
Egyptian, a disciple of Pachomius. After living in P's monastery for 23
years, Abraham retired to a cave, where he lived a further 17 years. His
cult is very popular with the Copts.
Frumentius of Ethiopia (d. c. 380) Frumentius and his brother Aedesius,
when they were youths studying philosophy at Tyre, got a chance to go on a
voyage around Arabia with their schoolmaster. But when their ship docked
at Adulis, Ethiopia, a fight broke out between sailors and landsmen, and
everyone on the ship was killed but F and A, who happened to be studying
under a tree at some distance. They became slaves of the king of Axum,
rose to honorable positions at his court, and were freed at his death.
Aedesius went back to Tyre, where he told the story to Rufinus (which is
how we know about it). Frumentius decided that he wanted to encourage the
conversion of the people he had lived among (he sounds like Patrick); he
went to Athanasius at Alexandria to ask that a bishop be sent to Axum; A.
consecrated Frumentius for the task. Frumentius spent the rest of his life
as a successful missionary in Axum.
Abban of Wexford (6th cent.) The Irish Abban was a nephew of either Kevin
or Ibar (my sources differ on this). He founded many monasteries, mostly
in southern Ireland.
