The year of this raid (and thus of abbot Berthar's death), given in the old _Catholic Encyclopedia_ and other early 20th-century standards as 884, is now understood to have been 883. The monastic church in question was not that of the abbey of Montecassino proper, destroyed by the same raiders ten days earlier, but rather that of the Holy Savior at the foot of the mountain. The actual administrative center at this time for the abbey and its extensive holdings, it was surrounded by a town founded by Berthar and named by him Eulogimenopolis (Greek for "city of Benedict"). A brief account may be found in G[raham] A. Loud, _Montecassino and Benevento in the Middle Ages_ (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2000), art. I, pp. 2-6; for a fuller treatment of the attack itself (resulting in the second of the four destructions of the abbey), see Armand O. Citarella and Henry M. Willard, _The Ninth-century Treasure of Monte Cassino in the Context of Political and Economic Developments in South Ita!
ly_ (Montecassino: Pubblicazioni cassinesi, 1983), pp. 119-21. Best, John Dillon
