Romanticism and Its Other Discourses
Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, November 13-16, 2003
Keynote Speakers
Jerome McGann, The John Stewart Bryan University Professor,
University of Virginia; The Thomas Halloway Professor of Victorian
Media and Culture, University of London.
Alan Richardson, Professor, Boston College
The International Conference on Romanticism announces a conference to
focus on the broad range of discourses that dominated the romantic
period in Great Britain, Europe, Latin America and America. Suitable
Paper Topics (20 minutes) would explore some aspect of the many
discourse systems that pervaded the period: cultural, literary,
historical, linguistic, social, legal, political and/ or economic.
Possible specific approaches could include the languages of
transcendence; the rhetoric of suffering; capital and the industrial
revolution; the discourses of luxury and aesthetics; travel and
imperialism; the rhetoric of racism and misogyny; carceral gothic;
female gothic; children's literature; the science of the brain and
the discourse of medicalization, etc. special sessions on the
Sentimental, the Gothic and the High Romantic are encouraged.
