THE HELP FOR HEALTH TRUST
PRESS RELEASE, 4 OCTOBER 2002
BETTER INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS
In response to recommendations made following the Bristol Royal Infirmary
Inquiry, The Centre for Health Information Quality (CHIQ) has been
commissioned by the Department of Health to help improve the quality of
health information available to the public by providing:
Training
To improve the way information is communicated with patients, we are
carrying out a needs analysis and developing training for key NHS
communications staff working in Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS).
Quality assurance tools
To improve the quality of information, we are developing guidelines for
producers/reviewers, to go with those already available from our website
HiQuality (www.hiquality.org.uk). There will be a particular focus on:
* tools to be used across key online NHS information resources
* a quality assurance framework for producers of cancer
information
* ensuring key safety messages are communicated clearly, with
the National Patient Safety Agency
Partnership development
To ensure principles of good practice are promoted, and key partnerships
forged, we will be holding a national conference in London, in January 2003.
In addition, there will be a series of exhibitions, including one at the
NICE conference in Birmingham, in December.
The Rt Hon Baroness Jay of Paddington, who launched CHIQ as Health Minister
in 1997, says, 'It is essential that the public has complete confidence in
information given out by the NHS. These key activities are crucial in
supporting the NHS consistently to provide accurate, clear and relevant
information to patients.'
Tom Hain, Manager of CHIQ, 4 October 2002
Notes for editors
CHIQ was established as 'an expert resource for NHS staff and patient
representative groups seeking to produce or procure high quality patient
information'*. CHIQ works with producers and providers of health
information, providing training, consultancy and information appraisal.
This will be the sixth successive year of Department of Health funding for
CHIQ, which is part of The Help for Health Trust, the birthplace of NHS
Direct Online.
