Dear All,
Greetings from Coastal Suffolk in England. I thought the following two items
from this week's Lancet (October 19) might be of interest to some of you.
1) Wentz R. Visibility of research: FUTON bias. The Lancet 2002;360:1256
Here the authors describe Full Text On the Net bias (FUTON) and points out
that this bias might have the same effect in daily clinical practice as
publication bias or language bias.
In a nutshell Full Text Articles On the interNet are more likely to be
accessed, read, quoted and probably used in treating patients more often
than those that just provide abstracts.
(makes very interesting reading and this communication in the Lancet is
available in FULL TEXT after free registration!!!).
2) Grimes DA. Uses of error - Uncertainity. The Lancet 2002;360:1242.
In this piece the author discusses his experience of uncertainity as a
junior doctor and explains how he learnt the limitations of text books and
authorities in real (clinical world).
(Again an intersting and good practical example and I hope to use it in my
next presentation on EBHC to medical students)
Apologies if the above was not of any interest to you and wishing you all a
wonderful autumn week end.
Cheers & regards,
Badri
