medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. September) is the feast day of:
John Chrysostom (d. 407) John was a native of Antioch, born in 347. He
received an excellent education, and in c.373 became a monk. After ruining
his health with austerities, John returned to Antioch, where he became a
deacon, then priest, then the bishop's special assistant. In his spare
time, he became a famous preacher and exegete. In 398 John became
archbishop of Constantinople. In that position, John reformed the court,
rather rigidly reformed his clergy, and in general made himself so
unpopular (especially with the empress Eudoxia, whom he appears to have
called "Jezebel") that he was exiled, but an earthquake soon led to his
recall. In 404 John was banished again. He died in Pontus after being
forced to travel in bad weather when sick and exhausted. In the West, John
is accounted one of the four Greek Doctors; in the East he is one of the
Three Holy Hierarchs.
Eulogius of Alexandria (d. 1607) Eulogius was a priest of Antiochia
(modern Antakya, Turkey), and became abbot of the monstery of St. Mary
there. In 580 he became patriarch of Alexandria. Eulogius played a major
role in the (2nd?) Counci of Chalcedon, and was a noted opponent of
monophysitism and Novatianism.
Amatus of Remiremont (d. 625) Amatus was born in Grenoble.. He became a
hermit, and then a monk at Luxeuil. But in time he left Luxeuil to become
the co-founder a first abbot of Remiremont.
